Revitalize

To many citizens, redevelopment and revitalize are words that have little meaning to the heart of a community. However, the Winston-Salem Brownfields Program, combined with community investors and other innovative initiatives, is making a difference to families and businesses alike. Here we introduce two redevelopment success stories that are restoring community pride and belief in safe, healthy and economically vibrant neighborhoods .

JKS Signs and Sports Before and After

When you think NASCAR, Liberty Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is probably not the first place that comes to mind. Yet this is the location of JKS Signs and Motorsports, a successful screen printing, displays, signs and graphics company that specializes in state-of-the art painting for many of the hottest sports cars in professional racing. Will Spencer, a fourth generation business owner in the Liberty Street area of Winston-Salem, owns JKS. Spencer is proud of his long-term commitment to the Liberty Street area and has set an example of how revitalization breathes new life into a community.

Reinvestment requires vision. Where many saw rubble and debris, JKS saw an opportunity to not only expand its business but to renew community pride in this area of Liberty Street. Over a period of ten years, the company acquired additional property and land. Instead of leveling old buildings, JKS preserved existing architecture whenever possible. The result has been overwhelmingly positive. JKS's complex of buildings is not only visually appealing, but also serves as a constant reminder of community renewal, stability and continuity.
